In case you have not heard the exciting news, the University of West London is now the new name for Thames Valley University (TVU).

The announcement highlights a strategic shift for the University with a re-positioning of its operations to its West London campus which comprises of a newly refurbished main building in Ealing and an 11 storey award winning building, 'Paragon', in Brentford.

The new name marks a change of emphasis to the University's mission with a strong focus on employer engagement at the heart of its new direction.  A new logo incorporates a dynamic wing shape representing the West London Griffin, pointing west, to create a trusted shield*.

About the University of West London

  • Following approval from the Privy Council, the University of West London is now the new name for Thames Valley University
  • A new ‘educational hub’ will open in Berkshire at the start of the new academic term for the University’s Nursing and other Higher Education students
  • The latest employability data shows that 86.8% of full-time first degree qualifiers from the University entered a job or further study within 6 months of graduation


  • First founded as the Lady Byron School in 1860, the education institution as it exists today was originally formed from the merger of Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, the London College of Music and Queen Charlotte's College of Health Care Studies
  • In 1991, this new entity was inaugurated as the Polytechnic of West London. In 1992 the Privy Council bestowed full university status and it became Thames Valley University (TVU)
  • TVU grew through a number of mergers, including with the Northwick Park School of Nursing, Riverside College of Nursing and the North West Thames Regional Health Authority's AIDS Unit in 1994, Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery in 1995, and with Reading College and School of Art and Design in 2004
  • In July 2010 the University's Further Education provision in Reading successfully transferred into a new partnership (Oxford & Cherwell Valley College and the Learning and Skills Network).
